What is testosterone?

Testosterone is a hormone. Hormones like testosterone are chemical messengers in the body which send messages from one part of the body to another to regulate how certain cells work.

Answers To Frequent Questions

Testosterone is a hormone made mainly in men’s testicles. It’s important for building muscle, maintaining bone strength, and supporting a healthy sex drive. It can also impact mood and sleep.

Low testosterone, or “Low T,” is when your body doesn’t produce enough testosterone. This can lead to symptoms like fatigue, low sex drive, mood changes, and reduced muscle mass.

Yes, low testosterone is fairly common, especially as men age. About 1 in 4 men over 35-40 may have Low-T. It can also be caused by certain medical conditions or medications. If you’re experiencing symptoms like fatigue or low libido, it’s worth discussing with a healthcare provider.

Low Testosterone (Low-T) can be caused by ageing, and this is normal. The typical ranges for “normal” testosterone levels reduce with age, so having a lower testosterone level in older age doesn’t necessarily mean that you have “Low-T”.

Low-T can also be caused by medical conditions like diabetes and obesity, injuries or illnesses affecting the testicles, and certain medications.

Blood testing is the only way to know for sure if you have a testosterone deficiency. Visit our “how it works” page to learn more about which tests are required, and how you can carry out testing. If the results show that you have low testosterone and you’d like to start testosterone replacement therapy, our team can support you through the process

It’s possible to increase your testosterone by exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet rich in proteins, fats, and carbs, getting enough sleep, reducing stress, and avoiding excessive alcohol. Depending on the case, a healthcare provider may recommend testosterone replacement therapy (TRT).

Yes, it is legal to access TRT therapy online and/ or via telehealth. It’s important to ensure any clinicians who are supporting with your treatment are Aussie-licensed, and that if you are prescribed any medication that you are purchasing from registered Australian pharmacies.

Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) can be safe when managed by a qualified specialist who regularly monitors your testosterone levels and potential side effects.

It is important to understand both the benefits and risks associated with TRT*:

  • Potential minor side effects may include:
    • fluid retention,
    • acne,
    • and increased urination.
  • More serious side effects can include:
    • gynecomastia (growth of male breast tissue),
    • worsened sleep apnea,
    • increased cholesterol levels,
    • decreased sperm count,
    • and infertility.

These risks can be minimised through regular monitoring and appropriate management by your healthcare provider.

Always discuss any concerns and possible side effects with your healthcare provider to ensure safe and effective treatment.

If your tests suggest that you are not suitable for TRT therapy, we will communicate this to you. You will also have access to your blood test results for further assessment.
